What Can an PADI Assistant Instructor Do?
Beyond the responsibilities and duties of a
PADI Divemaster,
certified PADI Assistant Instructors are authorized to perform the following:
- Teach academic presentations under the indirect supervision of an Instructor.
- Evaluate Open Water Diver surface skills under the indirect supervision of an Instructor.
- Teach the Peak Performance Buoyancy Specialty course.
- Teach the Project AWARE Specialty course.
- Conduct Discover Scuba experiences.
- Teach Emergency First Response after successful completion of an Emergency First Response Instructor course.
Course Overview:
The PADI Assistant Instructor (AI) course is the first portion of the Instructor Development
Course (IDC). The AI Program must be conducted at a PADI facility that is rated a 5 star or higher.
We conduct our AI Programs at area facilities that meet this requirement. We use several different
facilities dependent upon the store schedule and your schedule.
Prerequisites:
Must be at least 18 years old prior to start date of class, certified as a PADI Divemaster
or have a qualifying certification from another training organization, medical
clearance signed by a physician, and show proof of 100 logged dives.
Course Activities:
The first thing will be to schedule an Orientation Meeting to review the PADI Assistant Instructor
(AI) program requirements and provide the student the IDC Crew Pak containing all the
information about course. The PADI AI course will expand your teaching and dive leadership
skills through classroom presentations and independent study sessions. You will complete water skills and
stamina exercises in confined and open water. You will complete training exercises to test
your organizational and problem solving abilities. For a complete description of the Assistant
Instructor Course and all the requirements click here.
Forms Required: Students need to complete the three (3) forms:
Students training will need to complete the three (3) forms: Liability Release, Statement of Understanding, and
Medical Statement prior to entering the water.
Materials/Equipment Required:
You already have some of the materials required from previous classes you have completed.
You will need to purchase the IDC Crew Pak to obtain all the required materials. You will be able to use these
same materials when you continue to the PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor (OWSI) program.
Length of Course:
The course must be conducted over at least a 3 day period. It can be done in as little
as a 3 day period or over a longer period of time. The program must be conducted at a 5 star
or higher PADI facility. We rent a classroom at one of the area 5 star or higher PADI facilities.
We use several local facilities dependent upon classroom availability.
Class Dates:
We can schedule an Assistant Instructor Course at any time. We will need to know your dates of
availability so we can arrange for a classroom at a PADI 5 Star facility. Contact us so we
can reserve your course dates on our calendar.

Course Requirements:
The Assistant Instructor course is divided into Course Introduction, Knowledge Development, Teaching Presentations,
Evaluations, Rescue Assessment, and Demonstration Quality Skills. The student will prepare for the class by
self-study using the materials in the IDC Crew Pak. Students will complete all 16 IDC Knowledge Reviews prior to
the start of the class. All requirements must be completed under the supervision of an instructor.
Rotating Topic Schedule:
For the Knowledge Development portion of the Divemaster Course, we have a rotating schedule with
different assigned topics each week. While you do have to come to class to turn in your knowledge
reviews and take the exams, you do not have to stay and participate in the weekly classroom
presentation, however it is highly recommended. Candidates do not have to attend each and
every scheduled meeting. If you cannot attend a meeting, look at the assigned topic for the next
meeting you can attend and prepare for and plan on attending that meeting.
Materials/Equipment Required:
You already have some of the materials required from previous classes you have completed.
The items below identified with an "●"
are included in the IDC Crew Pak you receive in the program. The materials in the IDC Crew Pak are
for the Assistant Instructor Program are the same materials you will use for the PADI Open Water
Scuba Instructor ("OWSI") Program. You should not have to purchase additional materials when you
decide to continue to the PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor (OWSI) program.
