Course Overview: The Rescue Diver course is both rewarding and fun!
This course will expand your knowledge and experience level. Rescue Divers learn to look beyond themselves and consider
the safety and well being of other divers. Although this course is serious, it is an enjoyable way to build
your confidence.
Prerequisites:
Must be at least 12 years old prior to start date of class, certified as an Advanced Open Water Diver or
have a qualifying certification from a training organization, and successfully completed a sanctioned
CPR/First program within the past 24 months.
Course Activities:
The Rescue Diver course will prepare you to prevent problems and, if necessary, manage dive emergencies.
During the classroom, pool and the four open water sessions, you will cover: Self-rescue and diver stress,
AED and emergency oxygen delivery systems, dive first aid, swimming and non-swimming rescue techniques,
emergency management and equipment, panicked diver response, underwater problems, missing diver procedures,
surfacing an unconscious diver, in-water rescue breathing protocols, egress (exits), first aid procedures
for pressure related accidents, and dive accident scenarios.
- Classroom: The classroom session will cover all the chapters in Rescue
Diver Manual, review your knowledge review answers complete, prepare an emergency assistance plan for
the location where the rescue scenarios will be conducted, complete a 50 question final exam, and prepare
you for the open water scenarios.
- Independent Study: You need to read all the chapters in the Rescue Diver Manual,
complete all the knowledge reviews located at the end of each chapter and watch the entire video prior
to the classroom meeting.
- Confined Water Dives: We will introduce 10 rescue exercises during the training
sessions and demonstrate various techniques, students will practice each of the different techniques.
During the practice sessions, students will discover which techniques work better for them in different
situations. The Rescue Diver Course philosophy is that there is no single "right" way to perform a rescue,
but rather many workable options. The confined water pool sessions give students the opportunity to try
different options.
- Open Water Dives: If all 10 of the rescue exercises are completed in the
confined water pool sessions, then the 4 rescue scenarios may be completed in one day at the lake. The
scenarios are realistic giving students the opportunity to apply knowledge and skills learned in the
classroom and in the pool in a realistic context, providing additional learning. The end result is a
rewarding and fun experience building confidence.
Forms Required:
Students training will need to complete the three (3) forms: Liability Release, Statement of Understanding, and
Medical Statement prior to entering the water.
Materials/Equipment Required:
Rescue Diver Crew Pak (contains Rescue Diver Manual, log book pages, slate and certificate suitable for framing) and
Rescue Diver DVD, and scuba park entry fees for 1 day. Course fees do not cover equipment rental.
Length of Course:
Approximately 25 hours. This includes the independent study time. If you have read the entire book,
completed the knowledge reviews located at the end of each chapter and watched the entire video prior
to coming to the classroom session, the classroom session will last approximately 2 to 3 hours, the pool
session will take approximately 2 to 3 hours and one day at the lake for the 4 open water scenarios.
In addition, prior to Knowledge Development Number 2, students must be currently certified in CPR and
First Aid. However, the Rescue Diver course is performance based which means that we must complete one
section before moving the next. If needed, we will schedule additional classroom and pool sessions
(additional costs may apply).
Course Dates: This course is offered on the 3rd Wednesday each month.
The open water scenarios can be scheduled on any lake weekend.
