As of January 1, 2017, DIVING FOR FUN will
NO LONGER be offering training services. However, we wanted to continue to provide
a list of the classes we offered along with course outlines as a reference for all our past customers.
Course Overview:
This course will introduce you to the most common fish families and species found in temperate
and tropical waters. You'll also learn basic fish identification and scientific survey techniques
as well as how important personal involvement is in aquatic conservation. How many times have you
asked what was that fish I saw? After you take the Fish Identification specialty, you will learn
how to look up the fish by shape or family type.
Prerequisites:
Must be at least 10 years old and certified as a Junior Open Water Diver or an Open Water Diver.
Course Activities:
Read the chapter on Aware Fish Identification in the Adventures in Diving Manual and complete the
knowledge review located at the end of the chapter. You will learn about the Project AWARE philosophy
about protecting worldwide aquatic ecosystems, fish family groupings and common characteristics of fish
species found in the local area, fish surveying techniques and strategies for collecting valid data and
the planning, organization, and procedures for identifying fish families and species while diving. You
will be introduced to fish groups such as: (1) Oval shape fish - Butterfly fish, Angel fish and
Surgeon fish, (2) Small oval fish - Damselfish and Chromis, (3) Odd shaped fish - Peacock Founder or
Scorpion fish, Triggerfish, Filefish, Eels, Sharks and Rays. You will get to use your new knowledge on
the 2 dives performed under instructor supervision.
- Classroom:
There is one classroom session. The classroom session
will cover the chapter, "Project AWARE - Fish Identification" in the Adventures in Diving Manual, review your
knowledge review answers, and prepare you for both of the open water dives.
- Independent Study:
Read the chapter about Project AWARE - Fish Identification
in the Adventures in Diving manual and complete the knowledge review located at the end of the chapter. You
will need to turn in the knowledge review prior to certification or provide a copy of an Adventure Log
signed by an appropriate instructor if you have already done dive one in connection with your Adventure
Diver or Advanced Open Water Diver Certification.
- Open Water Dives:
The 2 open water dives are done at a blue water dive destination
or on a dive trip.
Forms Required:
Students training will need to complete the three (3) forms: Liability Release, Statement of Understanding, and
Medical Statement prior to entering the water.
Materials/Equipment Required:
Adventures in Diving Manual. Recommended: the Reef
Fish in-a-Pocket Book.
Length of Course:
If you have read the Project AWARE Fish Identification chapter in the Adventures in Diving Manual,
completed the knowledge review prior to coming to class then the classroom will last approximately
1 hour depending upon class size.
